Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
