Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using these treatments should be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
