WHO Sounds Warning Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Injections

Under 10% of patients who could benefit from obesity jabs like Wegovy have access to them, states the World Health Organization as it releases its first recommendations on the drugs.

With over a billion people worldwide currently obese, it is urging increased and just access to this class of drugs.

According to projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The new guidelines acknowledges that obesity is a chronic disease that can be addressed with thorough and continuous care," remarked the agency's head Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Substantial prices, insufficient output, and distribution challenges are key hurdles to universal availability to the treatments that can assist patients in reducing considerable body mass, notes the organization.

Weight-Loss Drug Supply Crisis

Despite the present best projected scenario, the production of these medications would only suffice for approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of the global need, as stated by the WHO.

The guideline encourages governments and firms to widen availability, by strategies like voluntary licensing.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of Novo Nordisk's Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple nations in 2026.

How Obesity Drugs Operate

These medications mimick a natural hormone to delay gastric emptying, suppress the appetite and enhance satiety so people reduce food intake.

People typically see weight reduction after several weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Research suggests people may put most of the weight back on after a year of discontinuing the treatment, when their typical food cravings resume.

Being above a healthy weight raises your likelihood for contracting diseases, like diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and some cancers.

Obesity impacts people in countries worldwide and was linked to millions of deaths worldwide in 2024, per the WHO.
